Review

Victoria and Albert Museum: Glastonbury Land and Legend,

London,

Glastonbury Land and Legend is a showcasing footage captured at the Glastonbury Festival in 2014 and curated by Kate Bailey.  Glastonbury is the largest and one of the most popular Greenfield festivals in the world. The attendance of this festival reaches around 175`000 people and its growing every year.  “The festival is inspired by the ethos of the hippie, counterculture, and free festival movements the rise of the hippie and other alternative styles came out from the modern incarnation of bohemianism” (Glastonbury Festival,2016). They denied the traditional culture and lifestyle, creating separate communities where punk rock raised and people stood at the forefront of the sexual revolution, used drugs (mainly cannabis and LSD) as a means of raising their research. Hippies also expanded and developed many other concerning issues as a women rights, global warming etc.

Concept of the exhibition is constructed as a huge tent with incorporated film and sound installations which makes this tent look like an incredible sound and video dance. By the first glance at this exhibition I was not hooked but by getting comfortable on one of the big pillows  I really got a chance to experience Glastonbury Festival vibes. I really enjoyed the idea of depicting festival spirit trough the layout of the exhibition. The tent itself reminded me of an Egyptian pyramid and after researching about the festival more I find out that this is a reference to Pyramid shape tent used back in 1971 festival.

This exhibition led me wanting to research and to find out more about bohemianism, subcultures, hippies, why people were using drugs, depression-era and other. It made me to consider problems I would never think of or I never considered before. Could I solve them using visual medias as a tool?

I gain a lot of experience and this spectacular exhibition gave me some inspiration for the future works.

CTS:Week 3

 

Contextual and Theoretical Studies: The image and the manifesto

Today we had an informative session of CTS. As we all were struggling about the Unit 2 project of manifesto this lesson was more than helpful. Firstly, we looked at few examples of different manifests, afterwards we had a discussion about them. Teacher then helped to look to all these references from a different angle. We did find a lot of hidden details which made more sense in some manifestos. I do understand them way better than before even if they are written in German language.

Later on when we warmed up our brains, we were divided in few small groups of 3 people. We them were given different manifestos as a reference. We got First things First manifesto, our main task was to represent this manifesto via drawing rather than writing. “We propose a reversal of priorities in favour of communication – mind shift away from product marketing and toward the exploration of a new meaning.” In this case author gave us an idea to draw all these logos who has a strong advertisement ground. The idea was to draw them from left to right side, from big to small and smaller size logos, which once a re intertwined in to a abstract drawing till they disappears. That is out interpretation for this manifest. It was fun and creative way to fit logos into abstract and dynamical drawing. From big to small, from significant to meaningless.

It was helpful to listen to the other people presentation/ interpretation as well. More people more opinions. Maybe I didn’t agree with some of those opinions, but it was really useful to hear what and how other people thinks.

My Voice

Today we had an interesting lesson of CTS. And it was a good introduction to the  successful researching.An author widely can be described as a creator .But the main task of a creator to make his artworks speak for himself.To express our own minds into a louder voice we have done this little exercise.

We were in the group of 5,  so we set all these 7 paper cards for research into order by usefulness for this small project. We worked as a group so we decided to split all of these cards like that. (photo below).In my personal opinion order would look a bit different than the previous one. In the 1st. place I would put  Wikipedia  because  most of my research begins from there.Wikipedia is a perfect place to start a research and gather more ideas or subjects to look at.

To develop our own critical voice  we started with  a second task. Understanding context helps us think critically. For this activity, we had to discuss “Pussy Riot” the feminist Russian punk group. As a resource we got  Gessen, M. – Words will break cement: the passion of Pussy Riot. We got more than 20 questions and 20minutes to discover as much information about” Pussy Riot” as possible . Working in groups was really useful as we were looking at different questions at the same time, as a result, we saved some time for more complicated questions. Task was more complicated than I thought before. But after 20 minutes we came up with almost all answered questions. Some questions were confusing  but we had to find  evidenced answers about the subject without actually reading the content.And it is a very important research skill wich I have to develop for future works.

After we finished with  our questionary we had to represent our answers in front of our class,which was another ordeal to me. In the group, we decided that we going to speak one by one. One girl  volunteer that she will  introduce our groups’ format. Also, we had to explain how and where able to find information on our format. As I said before Wikipedia is a good place to find some extra information for  a current project. It helped me to answer some questions as well. After all, I listen  to the other group’s presentation.It was interesting because they were using different sources and formats to research their questions and I learned a lot. It was a useful exercise because it helped me to achieve more knowledge how to evidence my arguments and  expand my research.  Now I do understand the importance of a good research, that I have to follow the questions constantly. And in the end, I will become with way better outcomes and stronger voice.
